Oh Me, Oh My, DIY!

I had such a brilliant day on Sunday at the very first Oh Me, Oh My, DIY! workshop where I gave a lil talk about styling and how to go about doing some wardrobe assessment.  I have to say a huge thanks to my dear pals and three absolute creative lassies Cathy of Turquoise Flamingo, Jill from Wild Floral Couture and Leona from Le Chat Noir Vintage Events for creating such a beautiful day which warmed the cockles of my heart!  There were five other uber talented mentors there on the day which included Jill, Magda of Magda Lukas Photography, Aoife of  Potty But Posh, Deirdre of Style 25 and Rosa of Rosa through the Looking Glass.  Had I not been a mentor myself I would definitely have been there as an attendee.
I also scoffed an awful lot of buns on the day as a super delish afternoon tea was provided by Tara's Tea Rooms. It also made me decide I'm going to use the word buns a lot more.....

Interview with the Designer: Alice Halliday

I recently took a trip down to Skibbereen and met up with the lovely Alice Halliday who lives and works in the area.  I also went to an amazing restaurant there called the Riverside Cafe and even though I had already had breakfast that morning I managed to tuck into brunch aswell.  Piggery to the max!!

Here's a few snaps I took of Alice's gorgeous work and her beautiful studio and we even had time for a little chat.

Can you tell me a little bit about your background, how you got into designing and making clothes?

By the age of 9 I knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer. I used to make barbie clothes with my mum and fashion cut-out dolls with my auntie. I would style my sister and friends and hold fashion shows for my parents, and even invented a game called 'The Latest Fashion'. I come from a very artistic family, and both my granny and mum used to make their own clothes.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Anywhere and everywhere really! Nature, historical costume, religious iconography, art, music, people! There's just so much beauty around to be inspired by.

What other designers do you like, at home and on an international level?

There are so many! But to name a few, some Irish designers I admire are Joanne Hynes, Helen Cody and Umit Kutluk. And internationally I love Ulyana Sergeenko, Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino

What do you like and what do you find challenging about being a designer in Cork/Ireland?

I like the fact that there isn't too much competition from other designers, and it's easier to stand out. It's not too hard to network and get your name out there. But on the other hand sales can be slow, there just isn't that much money around, or people are being very careful about spending. I think also people expect my pieces to be really expensive so they get a bit scared, but my designs are actually very reasonably priced, and I can tailor to suit all budgets, so it's worth enquiring!

Can you tell me a little bit about your love of environmentally friendly fashion.

I've always been a nature lover and very passionate about looking after the environment. I think it's so important to reuse old fabrics and not be wasteful. Fashion can be such a throw away industry, but people are definitely becoming more open to sustainable fashion, which is wonderful. To me, a garment is so much more interesting and special if it has a history behind it. Pieces made using vintage fabrics or upcycled from old clothing or textiles really have a story to tell, and it feels great to give them a new life!

What does a typical day look like for you(if there is such a thing)?

Hard to say really, Naythan, my beautiful boy has recently turned two so each day is a bit unpredictable. It's nice to make plans and have some structure but I'm learning to accept the unexpected and sometimes it's best to be spontaneous! I can be sure that every day will involve both laughter and tears! I only work two days of the week at the moment, from home. And the rest of the days I spend with Natty, usually we go somewhere, to visit friends or to a playgroup, or for a walk if it's nice.

And lastly, can you tell us an interesting/random fact about you?

My dad nicknamed me 'Tiggy' when I was a tiny baby because of the way my hair stood up on my head... like Mrs. Tiggy Winkle, and it stuck! My family and close friends still call me that to this day. I love the Beatrix Potter stories and I now have a beautiful framed Mrs. Tiggy Winkle illustration on my wall, thanks to my mum!

If you fancy owning one of Alice's beautiful pieces you can find her stocked at her etsy store , Brocade and Lime in Cork and Atelier 27 in Dublin.

Student Photoshoots

As you may know I started teaching my own styling course back at the end of January.  I have to say I'm really enjoying teaching my student's about personal shopping and styling.  Here are a few pics from my first groups photoshoots which they did as a final assignment.  Can't wait to see what my second groups styling inspiration will be.

Lynsey's shoot was inspired by her favourite fashion decade the 50's and took place in the Opera House.

Ruby used head pieces that she had made herself which were so beautuiful.

Elizabeth's dreamy shoot took place in the park.

All make up and hair was done by the fantastic student's at The Solo Academy

I also love this shoot which was styled by one of the make-up artist students.

Major thanks also to Jude from Wee Red Bike who did an amazing job with photographing the girls shoot.

My New Business Venture

As a lot of you may know I am a total accessory addict and one of my major weaknesses is jewels and brightly coloured baubles.  I got to know the Stella and Dot brand a few months ago and really loved their collections.  So I'm delighted to announce that I now have my own Stella and Dot e-commerce site where you can shop all my fav jewellery and accessory styles.

I'll be posting up my pick of pieces in the next few days but in the meantime take a pick at all the lovely bits on the website Stella and Dot/Natasha Crowley.  For all you magpies out there beware, there is some serious temptation here!

Brave and Beautiful Makeover Project

I recently had the pleasure of styling a really emotional photoshoot and video project with The Girls Club. The Girls Club is a Cork based charity and support group for women with or who have been touched by cancer.  The project was the brainchild of make-up artist Magdalena Bodziony from Elite on McCurtain St. and I have to say she did an amazing job of co-ordinating the whole day.  We all had such a fun day in Elite and I know all the girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Here are a few behind the scenes pics and I've also included the video which had me totally bawling!!

Amazing Grace

I've been mad busy the last few weeks so I feel like I haven't posted anything in ages and that's probably because I haven't!!  I've been doing some really interesting shoots of late and so I have loads of cool pics waiting to be uploaded.  Here's one that I did not so long ago with the beautiful Grace Gray from Lockdown Models and the super talented snapper Kestutis Anuzis .  This shoot was pulled together at the last minute but everything just worked brilliantly together from the gorgeous pieces from Miss Daisy Blue to the locations that we scouted just by strolling around town together.

Hope you like them.....

Oh Baby! Photoshoot

I'm a firm believer in people still being able to retain their personal style during and after pregnancy so I was delighted when my favourite maternity and infant mag  Oh! Baby Magazine asked me to style some articles showcasing and discussing maternity and post maternity style.  Instead of me preaching the do's and don'ts I decided that it would be far more interesting to actually show the readers how real life super stylish Moms are doing it.

Luckily I know a couple of these said Moms so for the Spring issue my friend, the very lovely Cathy O'Donoghue very kindly agreed to let me interview and style her for my piece.  Cathy is the owner of the online vintage store  Turquoise Flamingo a store where I have purchased some of my most favourite vintage pieces over the years.  Cathy also designed my new logo and this blog which I absolutely adore.  I love Cathys sense of style and that combined with the amazing work from White Cat Studio photography, Sinead Egan MUA and Andrew Cronin from The Edge Hair Design. made for a thoroughly enjoyable shoot.

Here's some behind the scenes pics from the shoot and the article.
Enjoy!!

Major thanks also to Perry St. Cafe for allowing us to use their fab restaurant as our location.
